Summer Day Camp in Hunter's Point

Christ Church has come to visit us 9 years in a row! This week they are hard at work out in Hunter’s Point - a neighborhood known for violence and organized crime which desperately needs to know the love of Christ. Through games, scripture reading, songs and small group discussion this group from Oregon is making a big impact. Their theme for the camp is “Jesus is Light”(which is always followed up by the little kids saying “ding!”- it’s really cute) and that is exactly what they are portraying. Some of the issues that children in Hunters Point face are ones that no child should have to. It is not uncommon for families living in this neighborhood to not only witness violence but experience domestic violence first hand. Gang activity affects children as young as 14. (Actually, one of the kids who we had hoped to see at the camp recently joined a mob). Day camp is so important because it not only allows a safe place to be vulnerable and act like a kid but it also brings the gospel in a unique way which allows us to see God’s light manifest in the hope that it fosters. Do you have a hope for the youth of Hunter’s Point? Then please pray for our team from Oregon this week as they partner with a local church to be lights of hope to these creative, vibrant and talented young people.
