Photo by YWAM SDBajaOn June 8, 2011 and June 21, 2011 the Mission Adventures teams in San Diego partnered with Feeding America, a ministry dedicated to stamp out hunger and provide nutritious meals to the millions in America that don’t have enough food to eat. Feeding America’s mission is to feed America’s hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks and engage our country in the fight to end hunger. In the span of about an hour and a half each day, our MA students packed 770 bags of food for children through their BackPack Program, a ministry giving kids food for the weekends and school holidays. This fed over 32% of the kids that participate in this ministry. WOW!!
They were also able to pack 180 bags of fresh produce for children & their families in the Farm2Kids Program, a ministry providing fruit & vegetables through local schools, and 190 bags of food for families involved in the MobilePantry Program which brings food to families with limited or no transportation and therefore can not get to their local food bank. And if that weren’t enough, they also relabeled 446 cans of food with important nutritional information. Our students ROCKED the Feeding America warehouse.
Our Mission Adventures teams were able to experience the human side of things as our host church, fb church of chula vista, is a receiving and distributing partner for Feeding America. Every Wednesday and Saturday hundreds of families line up around the church and down the block to receive much needed groceries and supplies. The students were able to supplement the Feeding America donations with local produce and various household items. They handed out boxes of food and glasses of cold water to those in line, some of which had been waiting patiently for hours in the hot sun to make sure they got food.
In all we were able to help feed over 1,100 families in San Diego and fight hunger and bring justice to those in need. With over 440,000 people going hungry each year in San Diego alone, the fight is far from over.
